Yim Yames - 'Tribute To' released August 3rd 24 June 2009 in Yim Yames

John Lennon once said he didn’t believe that musicians created emotions in their listeners. Rather, he believed that an artist’s role is to bring feelings to the surface that already live deep within us. Thus, while all human beings are connected to one another in some way, there is a special bond we feel with the artists that help us shine a light within our own core.

A few days after George Harrison passed away in 2001, Yim Yames was moved to record this six-song EP of Harrison covers, paying tribute to a man that he never met, but...

Power Walking 8 June 2009 in British Sea Power

This weekend’s Observer featured a great article in which the boys from British Sea Power led journalist Alexis Petridis on a ramble of the South Downs in Sussex. It’s an official Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and obviously worth a trip, but especially when armed with BSP’s guide to the area. Should you take an iPod with you, may we suggest that you download the suitably entitled ‘Come Wander With Me’ to take with you. The boys are currently giving away the track taken from their latest ‘Man of Aran’ album for free via their website....

The Best Things In Life Are Free 5 June 2009 in Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros

Janet Jackson must have seen this news post coming from way back in 1992 when she sung those illustrious words. For what we have for you is not 1, not 2, but 3 free tracks to give you a taste of what’s to come from a new band who are honestly one of the best and most exciting things we’ve heard in years. They hail from LA, from where we’ve had more than one report of fans becoming so overcome with joyful emotion at their live shoes that they cry tears of euphoric joy.

They make big, open-hearted anthems that evoke a different era when cynicism and irony didn’t course through pop music like countermelodies. The band’s aesthetic, no matter how contemporary and organic its evolution, screams ’60s psychedelia and ’70s boho-rock right down to touring in a converted school bus with the band’s name in script on the side and a driver named Cornfed.

So please take a listen and prepare yourself to spend this summer barefoot.

        Go here to download

Be quick – it’s for one week only!

        Enjoy! x

Golden Phone 1 June 2009 in Micachu

One of the highlights from Micachu & The Shapes acclaimed debut album Jewellery is out today on limited etched gold vinyl and as you may have guessed it’s ‘Golden Phone’. The song harnesses a multitude of sounds – vocal looped beats, mica sighing, electro-static squawks, keyboards being dropped – and fuses them into 24 carat pop gold.

And whilst we’re talking Micachu, don’t forget about her all night mixtape launch party this Friday at London’s Cable.

Golden Phone 7’s are available to order from Rough Trade.

Mary's Market 1 June 2009 in God Help The Girl

Stuart Murdoch has posted a free MP3 for you all to enjoy at the website for his latest God Help The Girl project. Entitled Mary’s Market, its intended to be the B side to the forthcoming single Funny Little Frog, out 20/7/09.

The cover features Scottish BBC newsreader, Mary Marquis as when Stuart was writing the song, he wrote the lines,

        You showed me yesterday’s dress
The one you nicked from Mary’s Market

Which sounded like Mary Marquis, so she got on the cover and by the looks of...

A New Signing.... 29 May 2009 in Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros

Fanfare It’s our great pleasure to announce the signing of LA’s Edwarde Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. For the best introduction to them and their music available we highly recommend you check out yesterday’s KCRW session.

They’re a musical collective led by Alex Ebert make big, open-hearted anthems that evoke a different (but perhaps no less turbulent) era when cynicism and irony didn’t course through pop music like countermelodies. The band’s aesthetic, no matter how organic its evolution, screams ’60s psychedelia and ’70s boho-rock right down to touring in a converted school bus with...

Get Ready to Rox 29 May 2009 in news

Cast your mind back to last summer when Winehouse was too ‘exhausted’ to play some big UK festivals with Mark Ronson and a young woman took the helm that made you question whether Amy really deserved her mantle. That young woman was Rox, a singer who writes her songs like she writes her diary, has an obsession with harmony, Frida Kahlo, Mahalia Jackson, love, tragedy and all that other good stuff that makes art enjoyable.

Now on Rough Trade she’s certainly a star in the making, but there are still opportunities to catch...

Micachu's All Night Mixtape Party 27 May 2009 in Micachu

Aptly titled ‘Kwesachu’ the new mixtape is collaborative project from Mica and her friend Kwes, a young producer from London. ‘Kwesachu’, features contributions from Mica’s friends: The XX, The Invisible, Man Like Me, Gold Panda and many more.

So to celebrate a lot of hard work and a job well done Micachu is throwing a launch party where she will giving a special Kwesachu live performance. Joining Mica and Kwes on the night...

Jarvis Puts Music In It's Place 19 May 2009 in Jarvis Cocker

Jarvis Cocker recently mused that if the voices suggesting or pronouncing the imminent death of the music industry are to be believed, then music may soon revert to an art form free from any commercial obligations. To explore this idea Jarvis and his band installed themselves in a Parisian art gallery for five days and exhibited themselves playing music under many different guises; as an accompaniment to an yoga class, as a treat for local school kids, as a facility for local musicians to drop in and improvise with and many more, full footage of which can be viewed

        Jarvis Cocker “Further Complications.”

“Further Complications.” is Jarvis’ second solo record on Rough Trade and is produced by Steve Albini after the pair met at last year’s Pitchfork music festival. Albini’s touch is noticeable on some of the rockier numbers and has delivered some brilliant fuzz and driving beats. Jarvis himself has given a performance to make us all proud, running the vocal gamut from roaring garage rock, to sleazy funk all spiced with his trademark story telling theatrics. The result is something quite kaleidoscopic in terms of mood, tempo and themes and features...

Jarvis Cocker Is Making An Exhibition Of Himself 5 May 2009 in Jarvis Cocker

And here’s the live stream to prove it http://www.jarviscocker.net/

A message from Jarvis to explain exactly what this is all about:

Back in October 2006, when I was asked to edit The Observer Music Monthly in the UK, I asked the question “What is Music for?”. Two & a half years on I would like to shorten that question to: WHAT IS MUSIC?

        ALSO

I have lost count of the number of articles proclaiming the imminent or actual death of the music industry. Does this mean that music can now go back to being an art form again? & If...
